Danish Language Courses

  • Course description Danish is one of the North Germanic languages (also referred to as Scandinavian languages). It is spoken by around 6 million people, mainly in Denmark; the language is also used by the 50,000 Danes in the northern parts of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany, where it holds the status of minority language. Danish is also a mandatory subject in school in the Danish autonomous territories of Greenland and the Faroe Islands. In Iceland, Danish is, alongside English, a compulsory foreign language taught in schools (although it may soon be suplanted by Swedish or Norwegian). In North and South America there are Danish language communities in Argentina, the USA and Canada.

The Kingdom of Denmark is located to the north of Germany, southwest of Sweden, and south of Norway. Denmark consists of the peninsula of Jutland and 443 named islands. The national capital is Copenhagen. As mentioned previously the Kingdom of Denmark also encompasses two off-shore territories: Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Denmark has a modern services market economy providing a good standard of living for its people, a stable currency and a high dependence on foreign trade. Denmark is part of the European Union but confirmed through a referendum in September 2000 not to adopt the Euro. Denmark's national currency is the krone.
