Ecology and Environment (Graduate Certificate - Graduate Diploma)

  • Objectives If you wish to update your knowledge and skills in ecology, evolution and environmental science, then this interdisciplinary programme is for you. It is made up of advanced-level courses offered in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences, the School of Geography, the School of Earth Sciences and the Faculty of Lifelong Learning. Its focus is the interaction of biological, physical and chemical components of the environment, both natural and manufactured.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Previous degree-level study or equivalent in biology, geography, earth sciences or a related area. Work experience also considered.

  • Course description You will take a range of modules across the various allied disciplines, but some specialisation in either physical geography/earth sciences or in the biological sciences is allowed. Different advanced-level modules are provided in alternate years. You will determine your own individual curriculum in discussion with the programme director.

    -Birds: Diversity, Evolution and Conservation
    -Coastal Processes and Management
    -Earth History
    -Ecosystem Diversity and Conservation
    -Environmental Microbiology
    -Flowering Plants
    -Fluvial Geomorphology
    -Land Plants
    -Plant Ecology Field Course
    -Plants and Humans
    -Plants Under Stress
    -Pollution Reclamation and Plant Ecology
    -Principles of Geographical Information Systems
    -Species and Populations.

    Teaching
    A combination of lectures, laboratory-based practicals, computer-based learning and fieldwork.

    A number of optional field-based modules, such as Ecological Techniques, are run as a series of linked weekends by the Faculty of Lifelong Learning.

    Assessment
    A mixture of coursework and formal examinations held in May/June each year.
