Electrical Energy Systems (MSc-Diploma)

  • Objectives The programme aims to provide knowledge and expertise in power systems plant technology, power systems analysis, distributed generation and active networks. This programme is designed to meet an urgent need to train specialists in advanced electrical energy systems which is required to address the challenges introduced by global energy considerations and the integration of renewable generation in electricity transmission and distribution networks.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements:
The course is suitable for graduates in electrical and electronic engineering, or in a relevant engineering discipline, or with appropriate professional experience. Applicants without an engineering or applied science background should bear in mind that there are significant numerical/computational elements to this MSc programme.

Applicants should have at least an upper second class Honours degree (or equivalent) from a British or recognised overseas university. Applicants with relevant professional experience will be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to pass either IELTS or TEOFL examinations with a minimum score of IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 600 (250 for computer based test).
  • Academic title Electrical Energy Systems (MSc/Diploma)
  • Course description Course Description:
The course programme offers specialist taught modules in the areas of:

-Power Systems and High Voltage Plant Technology
    -Distributed Generation
    -System Design and Regulation
    -Power System Control and Protection
    -Alternative Energy Systems
    -Power Quality
    -Smart Metering
    -Smartgrids and Active Network Devices
    -Power Electronics

The core technical programme is complemented by a dedicated Management in Industry module, and a Research Study which prepares for a substantial industrially-related research project. Optional modules are offered in the areas of Sustainability and the Environment, and enabling technologies of Electronics and Communications, and Magnetics.

    Special Features:
The programme integrates teaching in Power Systems, High Voltage Plant Technology and the enabling technologies which provides essential preparation for a career in future electricity networks. Graduates would be expected to gain employment in large electrical utilities, electricity distribution companies, the public sector (Energy agencies, Carbon Trust etc), research and development, or to set up their own companies.
Students will work closely with researchers in the School of Engineering's Centre for Integrated Renewable Energy Generation and Supply (CIREGS) and the High Voltage Energy Systems Group (HIVES). In 2004 Cardiff was designated and funded as a National Grid Research Centre (one of 4 in the UK university system) providing unique expertise in high voltage technology and power systems.
The programme integrates teaching in Power Systems, High Voltage Plant Technology and the enabling technologies which provides essential preparation for a career in future electricity networks.
