French, Certificate-Advanced Certificate

  • Objectives This programme helps and encourages students to develop spoken and written skills in their chosen language while learning about its structure. Students learn to speak and write the language in formal and informal contexts. Depending on the level of the courses, they will also learn about elements of society, culture, politics and the economy of the country or countries where the language is spoken. Students receive group tuition plus guided study in the university's Language Centre.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements You can start a language as an absolute beginner, or join at a progressively higher level depending on whether you have studied to GCSE or A-level
  • Academic title French, Certificate/Advanced Certificate
  • Course description The nature of the Certificate/Advanced Certificate languages programme enables students to join at higher levels, e.g. post-GCSE, and achieve the Certificate or Advanced Certificate in a shorter space of time. Students with no prior knowledge of the language may join at Course 1 and would normally qualify for the Certificate after three years' part-time study, or the Advanced Certificate after four years. Candidates with a GCSE or equivalent in the language may join at Course 2 and qualify after two years' part-time study for the Certificate and three years for the Advanced. Candidates with an A-level in the language and evidence of time spent in the country of the language studied may be eligible to join the Advanced Certificate programme at Course 3 and qualify after two years' part-time study.
