  • Objectives This programme aims to develop and enhance students' creative skills for career opportunities in designing and making books as a Book Artist, Book Designer, Book Publishing and in other areas of 3D book production. Equally, opportunities exist for students to set up and run their own small Book Art press or work in art publishing. There are also career opportunities in teaching and for progression to post-graduate study.
  • Entry requirements This course is ideal for graduates and professionals from Art and Design backgrounds, especially those with Fine Art, Illustration or Graphics degrees who are looking for a way to enhance their studio and professional practice. This course is also ideal for candidates with other academic backgrounds who want to develop a portfolio to pursue further study in Art and Design.

  • Course description This specialised area of Fine Art and Craft practice complements international interest in the Art of the Book. The learning and teaching emphasis is on analysis and problem solving through creative exploratory practice with materials and book structures. Practice is informed by the application of research, theoretical issues within the field, experimentation with materials technology and an analysis of structural design.

    You will work with a range of materials and techniques used in historical and contemporary practice.The course also provides opportunities for you to study the historical influences which have shaped the evolution of the book as an information container, an artefact, and as a fine art medium.

    Specialist subjects
    These units have been designed to deliver theoretical and practical information in Art and Design for visual communication practice. Specialist skills are aimed at enhancing existing graduate skills and enabling you to extend your critical awareness and breadth of knowledge while developing a portfolio of artwork.  

    Individually tailored research projects coupled with more in depth analysis will facilitate further development of your creative skills and broaden an understanding of the Book Art field. The specialist units are:

    -Book Arts, The Medium (20 credits)
    -Book Arts, Realisation (20 credits)

    Entry Requirements

    Students must possess an Honours Degree in a relevant subject or professional qualification recognised as equivalent to an Honours Degree.
