  • Objectives The Graduate Certificate in Photography Portfolio Development and Realisation aims to develop your critical reflective stance as a photographer. This course is distinctive because it allows students to consolidate their practice into a personal body of work. Skills that you acquire will help you to establish yourself as an informed and aesthetically conscious practitioner and will prepare you should you wish to pursue further postgraduate opportunities. The course offers a structured programme where students will be able to identify and engage with a chosen area of photographic practice. This may be within fine art, documentary, book publishing, fashion and editorial or education. Students will be encouraged to explore a variety of modes of photographic output. Students wishing to progress to Masters Level courses both within and outside the School of Media, will find the course useful to hone the knowledge and analytical skills required. They will also have the opportunity to prepare a wide range of high quality portfolio images in preparation for interview. The course is delivered by highly qualified and experienced photography practitioners who have retained close involvement with the industry. You will benefit from the School's excellent links with the media and the arts sectors, you will be offered an active programme of visiting speakers to include art directors, picture editors, book publishers as well as web specialists and photography practitioners.
  • Entry requirements We welcome applicants with degree or Higher Education qualification in related subjects. Mature students can apply without a formal degree if they have relevant experience. Do I need to produce a portfolio? If so, what should it contain? A portfolio is not necessary, but you should bring examples of your photography work.

    Students will work on projects related to two core units:

    -Ideas and critical debates in contemporary photographic representation (20 credits)
    -The portfolio as contemporary photographic representation (20 credits)

    -Work attachment (10 credits) *
    -Portrait and Identity (10 credits) *
    -Contemporary approaches to representing space (10 credits)*

    -Advertising and Fashion Photography (10 credits) *

    Career Prospects

    The course is prepare graduates or those with higher education qualifications for careers as photography practitioners or for further Postgraduate study.
