International Development: Public Policy and Management MA

  • Objectives The programme is designed to provide: -a comprehensive knowledge of the main concepts and skills required to provide leadership in public policy formulation and implementation within a development framework; -an opportunity to undertake a range of optional subjects to meet the specialist needs relevant to modern public sector and public policy in a changing environment; -an understanding of the design, implementation, and evaluation of public policy in developing countries; -an infrastructure for postgraduate research in the fields of public policy and development, in developing and transitional economies.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements: Applicants should have a good first degree (minimum 2:1 or equivalent) in a relevant discipline from an approved university. Admission of candidates who do not meet this criterion may be approved if satisfactory evidence of postgraduate study, research or professional experience can be provided.

  • Course description Special features

    An overseas field visit is an integral part of the programme. In the past students have visited Bangladesh, India, the Philippines, or Mexico. The cost of the visit is included in the programme fee. In addition, participants may undertake research visits to government and non-government agencies as well as other universities within the UK.

    -Economic Development;
    -Research Skills module or Applied Development Policy
    -Public Sector Reform and Management;
    -Economic Analysis of the Public Sector;
    -A Financial Analysis of Public Sector Restructuring;
    -Transformation in the World Economy;

    The remaining two optional course units may include:

    -Fundamentals of Information and Information Systems;
    -Micro Finance,
    -Trade Policy and Development
    -Politics and Development
    -International Management,
    -ICTs and Socio-Economic Development,
    -E-Government.
