LLB European Law

Objectives This degree is for those who have a good knowledge of French, German or both languages and who want to combine an English law degree at Warwick with studying another European legal system for an academic Year Abroad in the relevant country and language. Warwick believes that students should have adequate exposure to basic principles of English law before starting the study of foreign law in its own national context and that proper preparation (linguistic and legal) and careful supervision on the spot are essential to make a success of the year away. Lecturers from the partner countries are resident at Warwick to assist with this process.
Entry requirements General university admissions requirements All applicants must possess a minimum level of competence in English Language and in Mathematics or a Science. A pass at Grade C or above in GCSE English Language and in Mathematics or a Science, or an equivalent qualification, fulfils this requirement. For some courses, requirements are above this University minimum, so you should check the relevant course-specific entry requirements in our hard copy prospectus which you can order online or browse on our online directory. We usually ask for candidates to show a broad base of study at GCSE level (or equivalent) with passes in at least five subjects from a range of disciplines.

Programme

Year One

As for the normal LLB but students take an additional legal language module in French and/or German legal language.

Year Two

Those opting for a full Third Year in France or Germany also take Foundations of European Union Law and Law and Policies of the European Union, and either French Law or German Law, together with one further module or two half modules from the normal Second Year options list.

Those on the ICP take the core module, together with Foundations of European Union Law and Law and Policies of the European Union, German Law, Commercial and Consumer Contracting and one further half module. Commercial and Consumer Contracting is studied together with students visiting Warwick on the ICP from Lille and Saarbrücken.

Year Three

Students spending the full year in France or Germany follow an approved group of modules (including basic private law and basic public law modules) at their foreign university and are examined locally on these. They may also complete an assessed project on a topic agreed with Warwick, which usually involves a study of the foreign legal system in action. Students on the ICP travel with their French and German counterparts to Saarbrücken, where they spend the first half of the year following German law modules. They also follow modules on French law (taught in French) before proceeding to Lille II to study French law in the second half of the year. Finally, they write a dissertation on aspects of the different legal systems covered in the ICP and are examined by a joint board of examiners.

Year Four

All students return to Warwick and take the equivalent of four modules, chosen from the standard Second and Final Year Options list. Students may be permitted to write a full- or half-module dissertation instead of a taught module in this Final Year.
