MA Aesthetics

  • Objectives This course will enable you to draw on your background in Philosophy to pursue the area of Aesthetics in greater depth at postgraduate level, and to make the transition from undergraduate study to research-based study. Although it is quite normal for students to stop at the MA stage, the course also serves as preparation for those intending to proceed to MPhil and PhD programmes, and has been designed to fit well with the current strategy of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to offer funding packages of 1+3 years.

    -The independent Leiter report in philosophy now ranks our department in the top ten in Britain.
    -It is a centre of excellence in research and teaching and especially strong in the areas of metaphysics, mind and language, and the arts.
    -Most recent RAE rating was 5
    -We are home to the major journal, Analysis, and staff members include editors of some of the world’s most renowned Philosophy titles, including Mind; Mind and Language; and Australasian Journal of Philosophy.
    -We were awarded an Excellent rating in the most recent Subject Review

    Course Content

    You will take three core modules in:

    -Research Methods in Philosophy
    -Art and the Mind
    -Philosophy of Music


    You will also be able to take a further optional module choosing from a broad range of philosophical topics - reflecting the research interests of members of the Department - such as:

    -Meta-ethics
    -Identity
    -Perception
    -Causal Powers
    -The Problem of Universals
    -First-Person Thought
    -Directed reading
    -Normative Ethics

    Please note that all module details are subject to change.

    Finally, you will undertake a dissertation of 10,000-15,000 words on the topic of your choice (subject to the approval of the Head of Department).

    Course Structure
    This course can be taken on a full-time basis over 1 year (September to September) or part-time over 2 years.

    You will take 90 credits in compulsory modules and a further 30-credit module, before completing a 60-credit dissertation in your chosen specialism.
