ObjectivesContent and Language Integrated Learning is now found at all educational levels throughout the world. Teachers and students find that by integrating a content subject such as mathematics or science or geography through a foreign language, their engagement with both subjects is raised and the learning of both subjects thrives. This unique course has been developed to enhance the ability of all those engaged in CLIL to create theoretically underpinned purposeful and enjoyable learning experiences for their students. We hope that by offering a mixture of taught intensive modules and at distance study, we can give each participant the maximum flexibility to get the most out of the course.

Principles and Practice in Content and Language Integrated Learning-1
Core 1: (30 credits)
-CLIL contexts in the UK,Europe and the world
-Aspects of Second Language Acquisition theory relevant to the teaching of content subjects through a foreign language
-Aspects of learning theory relevant to the teaching of content subjects through a foreign language
-The analysis of subject-specific demands in cognition and language
-Principles of materials evaluation
-Roles of materials
-Choosing and adapting coursebooks

Core 2: (30 credits)
-The evaluation of strategies for supporting learners' academic and cognitive development in issues such as teacher talk, task-based learning, the use of pairwork and groupwork to support pupil talk, DARTS to support listening and reading
-Issues in Assessment in the CLIL classroom
-The role of culture in the CLIL classroom
-Designing materials
-Designing tasks across the four skills
-Materials creation and presentation
Critical Observation in the CLIL Classroom and analysing Classroom Language
Core 3: (30 credits)
-The principles and methodology of classroom observation and analysis
-The observation of CLIL teachers and their interaction with learners
-The observation of CLIL learners and their interaction with other learnershe analysis of records of classroom observation
-The role of talk in CLIL classrooms
-The analysis of talk in CLIL classrooms

Core 4a: (15 credits)
-The principles of classroom-based enquiry
-Previous classroom-based enquiry in CLIL and other bilingual classrooms

Thinking Skills

-The nature of thinking skills
-The role of problem-solving in learning
-Task design using thinking and problem-solving approaches
-The monitoring of the thinking processes which accompany tasks
