  • Course description This innovative part-time programme is designed for graduates who want to develop new directions as writers, whether in creative or professional contexts. Taught by published authors, it explores the links between different areas of writing through practice-based seminars and workshops. It also considers wider questions, such as how creativity relates to writing, and how language both shapes and is shaped by the culture in which it is produced.

    The course can be taken as a Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or MA, subject to validation. It runs on Tuesday evenings in Semesters 1 and 2.

    Modules offered in 2008-09 will be Life Writing, Self and Identity and Writing in Context. These two modules can be taken individually, or together as a Postgraduate Certificate course, or as the first stage of an MA.

    Life Writing, Self and Identity (30 credits)

    This module presents life writing as a source for a sustained writing practice, a growing area in publishing, and a critical field in which ideas of the self and subjectivity can be explored. Writing from personal experience will be encouraged both as an end in itself and as a starting point for working in other genres. Comparison between genres will be linked to discussion of publication opportunities, to ethics in writing practice, to questions of authorship and representation, and to the relationship between fact and fiction.

    Writing in Context (30 credits)

    As a means of developing students’ capacity to reflect on and develop their work, this advanced creative writing course will focus on the relationship of students’ own writing to contemporary cultural contexts, whether local or global. Creative work in poetry and fiction will be at the core of the module, but it will be strengthened by critical reading that will enable participants to situate the personal creative process within broader perspectives within Wales and beyond.
