MA in Advanced Japanese Studies (Research Methods)

  • Objectives The aims of the MA in Advanced Japanese Studies (Research Methods) are to: -provide the acquisition of high-level, practical Japanese language skills alongside a thorough awareness and understanding of the Japanese cultural context, -Allow students to acquire the tools necessary to conduct research using primary and secondary materials in Japanese, using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, and -Help students prepare for a Japan-related research degree while developing transferable research skills.

  • Course description Introducing the Degree

    The MA in Advanced Japanese Studies (Research Methods) is one of the flagship taught postgraduate courses offered by the School of East Asian Studies (SEAS). It grew out of the internationally-renowned MA in Advanced Japanese Studies programme and the School's involvement with the University of Leeds in establishing the White Rose East Asia Centre.

    The programme is designed for those who have already gained an upper intermediate level of Japanese (around Level 2 of the Japan Foundation Japanese Language Proficiency Test) and who are seeking to develop their written and spoken Japanese language ability to an advanced level where they can handle general and specialised texts, including literature and social science academic texts. It is primarily designed for those who intend to go on to pursue a research degree.

    Programme of Study

    A candidate shall take:

    -Advanced Japanese Language I (30 credits)
    -Advanced Japanese Language II (30 credits)
    -Social Science Texts in Japanese (10 credits)
    -Contemporary Japanese Society (20 credits)
    -East Asian Research Methods (30 credits)
    -Dissertation (60 credits)

    With the approval of the Head of Department, a candidate may replace one or more units listed above with other MA-level units.
