  • Course description The GEMMA programme is the first MA programme of its kind and falls in line with the implementation of the Bologna Process in European postgraduate provision. It carries high prestige within the European Union.  GEMMA is a two year interdisciplinary European wide MA programme that provides high quality academic education and professional competences for personnel working or intending to work in the areas of Women's Studies, Gender Studies and Equal Opportunities across Europe. GEMMA provides a unique opportunity to benefit from mobility as students are expected to study at different European universities. The eight partner institutions represent seven European countries with different locations and cultures across all Europe: University of Granada (Spain, Co-ordinator), University of Bologna (Italy), Central European University (Hungary), University of Hull (United Kingdom), Institutum Studiorum Humanitatis (Slovenia), University of Lodz (Poland), University of Oviedo (Spain) and University of Utrecht (Netherlands).

    Course content
    Students who complete the MA in Women's and Gender Studies will be able to:

    -command an advanced and critical knowledge and understanding of contemporary gender theories
    -critically apply an interdisciplinary approach to the study of gender
    -demonstrate an advanced understanding of research methods relevant to their particular field of interest in women's and gender studies
    -analyse the social, ethical and political implications of feminist research
    -analyse the value of feminist work and more generally gendered analyses within a range of contexts
    -critically apply a gendered perspective to a wide range of issues and tasks
    -negotiate different European university environments

    Teaching Programme
    The MA programme offers institutionally specific optional modules across partner institutions alongside four common core modules. The programme totals 240 credits (120 ECTS), of which 180 credits (90 ECTS) are taught and 60 credits (30 ECTS) are for the final dissertation.

    The programme is structured as follows: students will spend their fist year in the ‘home' institution completing all taught core modules (60 credits) and 60 credits of their optional modules, totalling 120 credits (60 ECTS). In year two they then spend either one or two semesters in their selected partner institution. They take 60 credits (30 ECTS) of options in semester one in the partner institution and then can return to their home institution in semester two to complete their final dissertation (60 credits/30ECTS). Alternatively they may remain at the partner institution during semester two and complete the dissertation there under joint supervision between their home and mobility partners.

    Assessment
    Assessment is by means of essays, examinations and other written and oral presentations.

    The new MA Women's and Gender Studies (GEMMA) programme is a pioneering and highly prestigious dual Masters degree offering students the opportunity to study across European universities in a choice of English, Spanish and Italian languages. This programme is interdisciplinary, providing gender modules across social sciences, humanities and literary studies.
