Entry requirementsEntry Conditions You should normally hold a upper second class honours degree or better in an Art and Design discipline from a recognized institution. Applicants with an equivalent qualification in another discipline may be admitted if they can show evidence of exceptional ability appropriate to the course. Applicants who have substantial and significant experiential learning, a portfolio of work and written evidence demonstrating the meeting of graduate qualities may be considered as an alternative entrance route.

Course descriptionThe programme is offered in both full-time and part-time mode.
Full-time
45 weeks (two + one semester) Delivered from September to June then September to January of the following academic year.
There is the possibility for an exit award after 30 weeks with a Postgraduate Diploma.
Part-time
90 weeks ( three academic years)
There is the possibility for an exit award after 60 weeks with a Postgraduate Diploma.
The Programme
This programme has been developed within the newly established MRes matrix creating a research environment for all courses delivered at postgraduate level.
This programme seeks to establish an environment where creative, self- motivated practitioners from a diverse array of design backgrounds, with different methodologies, can experience a cross fertilisation of ideas and approaches to the design process.
The strength of the course will lie in the debate that is generated between the variety of practitioners that the course is aimed at. Drawing together multimedia design students and textile designers, product designers and visual communication practitioners, applied artists and interior designers it will create a broad based knowledge bank from which to draw upon.
This rich source material will support and develop the specialist practitioner and provide opportunities for generating a potentially new and exciting hybrid practice or collaborative projects.
Within the programme there is a strong entrepreneurial strand, built upon tried and tested models developed by NESTA, in recognition of the essential skills necessary for a successful, sustainable practice within the rapidly growing creative industries.
The principle methods of course delivery are tutorials, group critiques, student -led seminars and lectures from staff within the whole of the School of Art and Design and visiting professionals.
Application
The normal closing date for applications in order to meeting deadlines for potential national funding is February. Interviews are arranged for March April.
Applications after this date may still be accepted.
You are asked to include at point of application evidence of current practice and a written proposal outlining your intended study.(Guidelines available from the course director).
Careers and Research Opportunities
The programme aims to prepare graduates to enter the professional world of contemporary designers/practitioners and to be able to compete in todays market.
Some will become design entrepreneurs establishing their own business ventures, eg. Self employed designer makers. Others will enter the creative industries as design managers or design professionals in areas of the arts.
This programme also offers the route to further research and the potential for moving towards a PhD.
