ObjectivesThis taught MA programme is designed to promote an understanding of Welsh social historical and cultural contexts at an advanced level. You will be introduced to the range of conceptual and methodological approaches that currently inform the study of cultures, nations and societies. We aim to increase your confidence and proficiency as a researcher through student-centred learning strategies and an intellectually demanding programme of study. The compulsory module Researching Wales, will provide a basis for further research on Welsh topics.

Course descriptionCourse Content
You will take the compulsory module on research skills, Researching Wales, and four optional modules from the following, each requiring an essay of around 4,000 words:
* Popular Culture in Wales: 1800-1914
* Welsh Women Writing in English: 1850-2000
* Researching the History of Women and Gender in Modern Wales
* Popular Culture in 20th Century and Contemporary Wales
* Media in Wales: Voice(s) of a Small Nation
* The Visual Arts Tradition in 20th Century and Contemporary Wales
* Nation and Identity in 20th Century and Contemporary Welsh Fiction
* Welsh Poetry in English: The Religious Dimension
* Professional Welsh
In addition, all candidates for the MA will be required to write a dissertation of 15,000-20,000 words.
How To Study
You will be taught in small seminar groups, in which you will be expected to participate in class discussion, and will be given the opportunity to
lead sessions under the tutor’s guidance. MA and PgD students take the compulsory module, Researching Wales, and four optional modules. Students taking the PgC qualification will take Researching Wales and one optional module.
Career prospects
Modern and Contemporary Wales students vary from those who have recently graduated to those who already work full or part-time, or who have retired. This postgraduate degree or diploma prepares students for a wide range of employment opportunities in Wales especially, but also beyond. Opportunities exist throughout the private and public sectors, in public relations and education, in all branches of local and Assembly-led government, plus any administrative and creative posts in the arts, media and journalism that require a broad but firmly-based knowledge of contemporary Wales.
