  • Objectives The emphasis of the programme is on the integration of theory with reflective practice, and on developing a perspective on human interaction, human development and human family relationships. The approach explores how attitudes and beliefs are shaped within a family and how they in turn influence the developing infant, child and adolescent, and how they are subsequently reflected in the individuals belief system, life choices and relationship.

  • Course description Programme

    The training includes DSM IV diagnosis, assessment and therapeutic strategies for working with children, adolescents and families. Stress is placed on the presence, openness and authenticity of the therapist, an acceptance of non ordinary states of consciousness, a respect for the client?s self healing capacities and methods that evoke these capacities, a view of dysfunction and crisis as an opportunity for growth, and on the therapist as an expert facilitator rather than physician. The programme is divided into six teaching and four practical modules totalling 180 Masters Level credits. Modules include, Child Development and the Child/Parent Relationship, Child Therapy, Adolescence, Family Relationships and Dynamics, Family Systems, Infant Observation, Child Observation and Clinical Practice.

    Teaching/assessment

    The course involves one day per week over two years. Training includes lectures, group discussion, skill development, supervision and an infant observation group and weekend seminars. Assessment is by essays, oral and written case studies, observation journals, an oral exam and a final dissertation.
