The MA HRM at Bristol Business School will give you the knowledge, skills and insight needed for a successful career, as well as the qualifications needed to lift you above other candidates in the job market. You don't need to be working in HRM already to benefit from this course, as it covers everything you need to know about the discipline, particularly as it is practised here in the UK. You can choose to study this course full or part-time. There is also the flexibility to leave the programme at several exit points with a recognised qualification and graduate membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. Become a qualified HR professional The course will give you the analytical and research skills needed to become a creative and dynamic HRM professional. You can choose to study full-time or take the part-time route, and the flexible structure allows you to study to Certificate, Diploma or Master's Level. On graduation you will be eligible for graduate membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the UK professional body for HR professionals.
  • Entry requirements This is a challenging course, whether studied part-time or full-time, and it will require a significant commitment of time and application on your part. You'll need a good honours degree from a recognised Higher Education institution or equivalent from a recognised overseas institution. If you do not have a first degree, you may still be able to take the course. You may need to take a written test before being accepted.

    There are three stages to study towards a Master's degree:

    Postgraduate Certificate

    Study the theory and practice of management and organisational theory:

    -Managing People
    -Organisational Management
    -Managing Information for Competitive Advantage
    -HRM in a Strategic Context

    Postgraduate Diploma

    The core syllabus - Human Resource Management and Development - focuses on strategic and integrative HRM, including:

    -Employee Resourcing
    -Employee Relations
    -Managing Reward
    -Employee Development

    You also choose four electives from a range of subjects across the field of HRM that give you the opportunity to specialise. These currently include:

    -People Resourcing
    -Employee Relations
    -Psychological Assessment
    -Management and Career Development
    -Managing Reward
    -Employment Law

    There are also a number of skills workshops linked to individual modules to develop your personal and professional effectiveness these include Interviewing, Preparing for an Employment Tribunal, Negotiation and Redundancy Handling.

    Management Report/Master's Dissertation

    For full-time students this stage is based on an organisational five (Diploma) or ten-week (Master's) placement which is a unique feature of the programme. Part-time students typically complete the management report or Master's dissertation in their own organisations. The research project is designed to develop your applied understanding and to be of real value to your organisation. You will receive research methods tuition in preparation for this stage.

    Your professional development

    As an integral part of your study, and in order to be eligible for CIPD graduate membership, you will also complete of a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) log.

    There is flexibility to leave the programme with a recognised qualification on completion of each stage:

    Postgraduate Certificate in Personnel Studies with licentiate membership of the CIPD.

    Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management with graduate membership of the CIPD.

    Teaching and learning
    Traditional lectures are only one part of the course. You'll also learn through syndicate work, presentations and discussion, seminar groups, analysis and application of case studies as well as experiential learning and simulations including role-plays, skills workshops and independent study. These modern methods create an environment that is enjoyable, varied and hugely effective.

    Bristol Business School is recognised as a 'Centre of Excellence' by the UK's Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. All your tutors are established researchers in the areas in which they teach and/or are consultants.

    Attendance
    The full-time route is an intensive 12-month programme commencing in September. There is an option to complete after the first nine months with the Postgraduate Diploma and gain CIPD recognition although students usually choose to study for a further months and gain the prestigious Master's award.

    The part-time route involves attendance at the Business School for one afternoon/evening a week during term time. There is the option to complete after two years with the Postgraduate Diploma and gain CIPD recognition or study for a further and gain the full Master's award.

    Assessment
    Our assessment methods are chosen to resemble the types of work faced by professional practitioners and include a continuous professional development log as well as examinations, class work, case study analysis and written coursework.
