  • Entry requirements students interested in developing their knowledge of the main intellectual, political and cultural trends that have flourished in the Mediterranean region and which have impacted on the region in the contemporary era, from the Middle East conflict to the involvement of the US and Europe in the region.

    - Offers the opportunity to study with leading international experts dealing with the Middle East and wider Mediterranean.
    - Provides enhanced skills and qualifications for future employment and research in an increasingly important field.
    - Provides a stimulating environment for the study of the Mediterranean in a world capital that has close ties with the region.

    The programme offers interdisciplinary teaching in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern history, international relations, security, culture, languages and politics. It has been host to a dynamic group of students at MA level representing nations as diverse as Saudi Arabia, the United States, Syria, Canada, Cyprus, Japan, Pakistan, Turkey, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Greece, Germany, Qatar, Ireland, France, Belgium, Italy, Israel, Portugal, Jordan, Switzerland and the UK. Apart from the expertise available on the core Mediterranean programme, students can draw on the knowledge of a number of departments including Byzantine & Modern Greek, Theology & Religious Studies, language departments and the Modern Language Centre.

    Current modules include:
    War & Peace in the Middle East; The European Union & the Mediterranean; US Policy towards the Mediterranean & the Middle East; Anti-Zionism & Anti-Semitism in the Twentieth Century; Inter-Faith Relations in the Mediterranean; Modern Islam; From unification to integration: Greece c1910-40; Greece in the 1940s: A nation in crisis; Byzantium and the West, AD 843-1002.

    Programme format and assessment
    Taught core and optional modules assessed by coursework and/or examination plus a compulsory dissertation which accounts for one quarter of the marks.

    Duration
    One year FT, two years PT, September to September. PT attendance flexible.
