    Post-Tonal Music and Composition Theory

The module considers the ways in which modelling and borrowing have entered the content of 20th-century music from the point of view of the composer and listener. It examines technical procedures involved in modelling and explores the ways in which composers have contextualised the 'borrowing' as revealed by the music and the composer's writings. Taking as a starting point the ideas of Harold Bloom (poetry), Wollheim (painting), Charles Rosen and Joseph Straus (music), the course examines influence, modelling, recomposition, borrowing, quotation and parody.
