  • Academic title MA Russian Language and Culture
  • Course description MA
One year full-time, two years part-time

    Course description

This MA centres on the literature, cinema and art of twentieth-century Russia while helping you develop near-native fluency in written and spoken Russian. It is currently the only MA course in the UK offering complementary language and culture studies.

    Course content

All students take a core language module, which comprises three main language skills: performance that includes liaison interpreting, presentations and discussions; translation; writing and editing.

You will also take two interdisciplinary modules:

        * Responses to Repression: key elements include works by Babel, Mandelshtam, Zoshchenko, Platonov, Solzhenitsyn, Shalamov and discussions of movies on the repression.
        * New Horizons in Art: Russian thought of 1900-1925, the ideas of the Formalist critics and the ‘isms’ of literature and art of the time.

A student may be permitted to take one option offered as part of another MA programme in the School or within the Faculty of Arts, provided that the MA convenor agrees that this would be beneficial for the student's intellectual development and research plans. In the case of options outside the School, admission to such courses requires the further agreement of the course convenor.

    Assessment

For the language module you will be assessed through translation and editing projects, written and spoken presentations in Russian and liaison interpreting testing. For the other modules you will produce one assessed essay of 4,000 words for each module, and a dissertation (normally in English) of 10,000- 12,000 words.
