MSc Advancing Clinical Practice

  • Objectives Advancing Practice is about challenging the professional boundaries of practice and developing new roles - it encompasses the American notion of the blended role, combining the concept of a nurse practitioner with a clinical nurse specialist This course has been developed to challenge, strengthen and lead practice at the forefront of health care provision in the 21st century - the School's outstanding modern facilities mean we can deliver the highest level of postgraduate and professional training and support The programme is delivered in modular form, allowing you flexibility and choice to match your own personal and professional requirements There are currently three specialist routes that you can follow: Emergency Nursing, Primary Health Care, and Trauma and Orthopaedic Nursing Clinical work in assessing clients is a crucial part of your development, as is the ability to undertake physical patient examinations - you will provide holistic care to patients in a way that promotes continuity and best practice Two of the modules deal with nurse prescribing – there are opportunities to use these modules to gain prescribing status You may be able to obtain sponsorship from the Birmingham and Black Country Workforce Development Confederation You may be required to study an access module: Reflective Practice (Level 3) This course is currently undergoing revalidation, which may result in changes to the course content
  • Entry requirements We look for graduates with an appropriate Honours degree, and with evidence of research study up to degree level You must be a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) You should be practising for a minimum of 21 hours per week, with access to client groups specific to your chosen route You should possess a minimum of five years post-registration experience and have written support from your chielf executive, senior nurse and preceptor from the supporting NHS Trust You should have a place of employment in Britain, in which your role can be developed

    Successful completion of the course will enable you to further develop your nursing role and practice to an advanced level of proficiency, autonomy and quality

    You could also work as a GP partner, lead in nurse-led pilot schemes, manage a walk-in centre, undertake triage in practice, or lead nursing/health visiting within professional bodies and organisations
