  • Course description Programme

    Many areas of research and commerce are becoming increasingly dependent on the use of data and computational resources that are distributed over the internet. This programme aims to provide students with an understanding of the techniques used to provide these distributed computational capabilities and to prepare them for a career applying them in either academia or the commercial IT sector.

    Edinburgh is one the major centres of research into e-science and grid computing in the world, and is the home of the UK National e-Science Centre (NeSC), run in collaboration with the University of Glasgow. The core courses in the e-Science MSc are taught by staff from NeSC and the Schools of Physics and Informatics who are at the forefront of research and training in the field, while students can choose from a wide range of options, to create a syllabus tailored to their individual interests and career goals.

    Learning Outcomes

    Students who undertake this programme will:

        * demonstrate proficiency in the practical use of a number of technologies commonly used in e-science and related commercial IT sectors;
        * develop presentation and time-management skills, and their abilities to critique technical documents;
        * become sufficiently well-qualified for undertaking research in an e-science domain or working in the commercial IT sector.

    How You Will Be Taught

    The programme comprises lectures, practical exercises, tutorials and individual study, and will be assessed by a combination of exams and coursework. The coursework will include individual and group assignments leading to presentations and posters, while the individual research project is assessed by a dissertation and presentation.
