  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Applicants for MSc programmes should have at least a 2.1 Honours degree, or equivalent non-UK degree. Normally, this should be a degree in economics or finance or a joint degree containing a significant amount of economics.

    PgDip: 9 months full-time; 18 months part-time taken over two sessions


    This programme offers training in the key areas of financial analysis, forecasting and financial investment. It will provide you with an understanding of:
    •    the underlying forces driving the financial markets and the relevant analytical tools;
    •    management of portfolios so as to optimise clients’ objectives;
    •    forecasting of the future behaviour of stocks, interest rates and exchange rates.

    We expect graduates from this programme to gain employment in financial institutions, government organisations and international organisations such as the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. The programme also provides a strong foundation for PhD research.

    Content

    You will take four compulsory courses and two elective courses. You will write a dissertation of between 12,000 – 15,000 words.

    The compulsory courses are
    •    Financial markets and portfolio analysis
    •    Financial institutions and markets in developing countries
    •    Modelling and forecasting financial markets
    •    Basic econometrics.

    You will choose TWO electives from the following list
    •    Financial derivatives
    •    Foreign direct investment and development
    •    Financial engineering
    •    Financial sector stability and growth
    •    Globalisation, trade and economic development
    •    International finance and money
    •    International trade
    •    IMF, world bank and economic growth
    •    Mathematical finance
    •    Money, finance and growth
    •    Public finance.
