MSc Mobile and Satellite Communications

  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements: A good Honours degree in an engineering subject, computing, physics or mathematics. If you do not have these qualifications we will consider your case individually.
  • Academic title MSc Mobile and Satellite Communications
  • Course description An astonishing global revolution in mobile and satellite communications has taken place in the last 15 years, the full impact of which is difficult to exaggerate. Satellite audio and video broadcast, third generation (3G) terrestrial mobile systems, global positioning systems (GPS), satellite-integrated networks, broadband internet access, and a wide range of wireless communication technologies are just a few of the many ubiquitous applications that have emerged.

    The resulting growth in the mobile and satellite communications industries in the UK and abroad has created a high demand for graduates who possess in-depth expertise in the key areas of digital, mobile and satellite communications and networking.

    This MSc produces highly competent graduates who can fill key positions in industry and academia, and play a leading role in shaping the rapidly evolving telecommunications arena. On successful completion, you will be well-equipped to develop new applications with full awareness of all the
    issues involved in the new generation of communication systems. The course includes advances in antennas and propagation, digital transmission, satellite communications, mobile communications, satellite networks and wireless applications, as well as a core project through which students will maximise their knowledge and competence in a specific area.

    A similar course is currently offered in two other UK universities. However, at Glamorgan we have enriched the course content with the inclusion of a new module in the emerging area of satellite networking and a module in product management. Furthermore, the use of block-mode delivery makes
    modules available to short course participants and part-time students who wish to continue in full-time employment while studying for the MSc.

    Course Content

        * Satellite Communications
        * Satellite Networking
        * Digital Communication Systems
        * Wireless and Personal Communications
        * Applied Digital Signal Processing
        * Product Management and Integrating Case Studies
        * MSc Major Project

    How To Study

    There are six taught modules and an 18-week major project. Each module comprises 48 hours of formal lectures and the equivalent time in self-directed
    laboratories. If you are studying part-time you will complete three modules per year. You will learn to use the latest computer-aided engineering tools and
    techniques for the design, manufacture and testing of electronic products.

    Career prospects

    Advancements in technology, such as the increased use of wi-fi, are creating exciting career opportunities for graduates equipped with the
    required skills. Graduates can enter the telecommunications industry in many different roles, conduct research in mobile and satellite
    communications, or work towards a PhD.
