MSc-PgDip Petroleum and Gas Engineering

  • Objectives The programme aims to provide engineers and industrial practitioners with an advanced specialism in petroleum and natural gas engineering and business management. The programme also enables the engineers and scientists to understand exploration, drilling, production and distribution and transmission of oil and gas from practical and theoretical viewpoints. The knowledge and the skills acquired in problem solving in terms of development, design, business and economics management in oil and gas engineering assist the graduate in making management or scientific decisions. Graduates from the course, based on the suitability of their entry qualifications, with a completed MSc degree may be eligible to join the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers or Petroleum Engineering which may enable them to qualify as a Chartered Engineer
  • Entry requirements The Petroleum & Gas Engineering Programme is designed for graduates, after their first degree or equivalent who are working, or intend to work in the oil or natural gas industry.
  • Academic title MSc/PgDip Petroleum and Gas Engineering
  • Course description Modules

    -Petroleum Economics & Project Management
    -Geology, Exploration, Drilling & Production
-Fundamentals of Natural Gas & Production Systems & Design*
    -Distribution, Transmission Systems & Design*
    -Gas Flow & Network Analysis*
    -Experimental and Measurement Methods*
    -Dissertation (MSc)

*Students on this programme will study these four modules with existing Gas Engineering & Management students.

    Method of Assessment
Petroleum and Gas Engineering students are required to attend all of the modules. There are seven examination sessions. Students must pass all the modules studied with an overall average of at least 50% in the module programme and in the course assessed work.

All laboratory and course assessed work must be submitted on time and to the required standard.
Students admitted to the course at Diploma level with examination and coursework of 50 % may proceed to MSc level. (120 Credits)

MSc Students must undertake a dissertation (60 Credits) on any aspect of the natural gas business either experimentally or computationally. The project can frequently relate to research work already in the school and or natural gas engineering and management.

    The Dissertation
MSc Students must undertake a dissertation on any aspect of the natural gas business. This can be in the form of either experimental or computational based. The project can frequently relate to research work already in the school and natural gas engineering.

    Duration
MSc: one year, full-time; three years part-time.

    Entry requirements

-The minimum entry requirement for those from a British University with Engineering and Scientific disciplines is 2:2 degree.
-Mature and experienced candidates or those with other suitable qualifications may be considered on an individual basis for entry to the Diploma programme.
