PGCE (Psychology) in Secondary School Teaching

  • Objectives This is a full-time taught PGCE which commences in September 2008. The 36 week programme focuses on the 14-19 age group, notably 'A' level and GCSE, but experience of teaching Key Stage 3 may also be provided Generally trainees will have to teach a 'second' subject – depending on experience and qualifications The programme is organised around two school placements and a total of two-thirds of the training takes place in a school setting If you are successful you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status and you will be prepared to teach pupils in the 14-19 age phase You will benefit from being part of a relatively small teaching group, lead by a specialist tutor Study includes two modules (60 credits) at Masters Level and on successful completion of the programme you will have credits which can be used towards a Masters degree in the future
  • Entry requirements Normally, you should have a good Honours degree (or equivalent) and experience of working in schools, or with children in some other formal setting We look for graduates with an appropriate Honours degree in psychology - graduates with joint degrees, including psychology, may still be eligible for entry You should have a good standard of written and spoken English (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent) You should possess both English and mathematics at (at least) GCSE Grade C If you are currently employed, we request a statement of support from your employer

    The PGCE Psychology route is a full-time taught PGCE which leads to Qualified Teacher Status. This must then be followed by a probationary year as a Newly Qualified Teacher

    It is anticipated that all successful candidates will obtain teaching posts in Secondary Education teaching Psychology and possibly a related area at Key Stage 4 and Post-16
