  • Objectives These courses are specially designed for teachers, speech and language therapists, and other professionals working with children with special educational needs. The Advanced Certificate is available for teaching/learning support/SLT assistants. Courses focus on children's language and communication difficulties and how these impact on learning. Course materials promote collaborative learning and provide a continuum of opportunities for learning that allow practitioners to build on their own existing knowledge and experience. The courses aim to -increase knowledge and understanding of language and communication impairments, consider the consequences for children's learning and reflect on implications for practice. -support practitioners in developing best practice for inclusive and special education. -promote successful collaborative practice for professionals who work in an educational context with children who have speech, language and communication difficulties.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements All applicants will normally have two years of relevant work experience with children. In addition: -Applicants to the MSc programme will normally have a minimum of an upper second class degree at undergraduate level. -Applicants for the PG Cert or PG Dip programmes will normally have a first degree or a degree-level professional qualification. -Applicants to the Advanced Certificate programme may not have an academic background and will normally demonstrate a committment to professional development through attendance at relevant courses and previous work-based study.

  • Course description Course content

    Modules focus on children's learning, speech and literacy and language and communication across the range, and on developing an evidence base for practice.

    PG Diploma and MSc students also complete a work-based case study, extend their research knowledge, and select 2 or more impairment-specific topics for in-depth study such as:

    -Specific language impairment
    -Autistic spectrum disorders
    -Learning difficulties
    -Speech difficulties
    -Behavioural difficulties
    -AAC
    -Hearing impairment
    -Auditory Processing Disorder
    -Dysfluency

    MSc students are supervised to carry out their own choice of research project.

    Course Delivery
    One to three years part-time study by distance learning delivered online, with 3 study weekends per year included within the course fee.

    Students may transfer from one programme to another, for example transferring from PG Cert to PG Dip, at the end of one year
