  • Entry requirements Entry Conditions To satisfy the general entrance requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma, you should normally have gained a degree (from a university of the UK or the Republic of Ireland, from the Council for National Academic Awards, the National Council for Educational Awards, or from other institution which has been recognised by the Senate for this purpose) which has a substantial component of economics (i.e. single, major or joint honours) or an equivalent standard in a Postgraduate Certificate, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma or approved professional or other qualifications; and provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English (GCSE grade C or equivalent). Alternatively candidates may achieve an equivalent standard in a preliminary examination or provide evidence of their ability to undertake the course through the accreditation or prior experiential learning. Those who successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma are eligible to progress to the MSc.

  • Course description This course is particularly targeted at the professional development needs of civil servants, economists working in the private sector, teachers of economics and others who need an awareness of some of the recent advances in economic analysis for their work. It runs on a part-time basis on Wednesday afternoon throughout the year.

    You enter at the Postgraduate Diploma level and undertake four compulsory modules in the first year in the areas of microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and quantitative analysis. You then choose four options from a range of modules (subject to availability) in the second year to tailor your course of study to suit your interests and career plans. If you complete the Postgraduate Diploma successfully and if you did Topics in Econometrics, you will be eligible to progress to the MSc that entails the completion of a dissertation, which is normally submitted within 12 months of MSc registration.
