Course descriptionPostgraduate Diploma leading to the MSc in Community Youth Work with professional endorsement by the North South Education and Training Standards Committee for Youth Work (NSETS) and the University of Ulster.
The course offers graduates the opportunity to work towards a professional qualification in the field of Community Youth Work endorsed by the NSETS. Students will gain the nationally recognised professional award at the Postgraduate Diploma level and may continue their studies to Masters level. The course meets both the professional and academic requirements set by the NSETS and the University of Ulster.
The course includes two work-based placements.
• One is based in the student’s workplace (eight weeks by 30 hours). This aspect of the course, i.e. the in-situ reflective practice placement is supervised by a practice teacher and assessed through ongoing supervisory sessions leading to a final report on practice agreed by a University tutor, the practice teacher and the student.
• The second placement of a four-week block or120 hours which should complement the student’s current employment offering them an opportunity to develop skills outside their agency.
Duration and Mode of Attendance
Two years of part-time study for the Postgraduate Diploma and a further one year of part-time study to complete the Masters by dissertation.
Professional Recognition On successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma students will be awarded a nationally recognised professional postgraduate qualification in community youth work.
Structure and Content
The course consists of the following modules:
-Interpersonal skills. (20 credits)
-Advanced Social Policy. (20 credits)
-Leadership, Management and Supervision. (20 credits)
-Informal Education. (20 credits)
-Working in Communities. (10 credits)
-Placement: 8 weeks in-situ practice and 4 weeks ex-agency (20 credits)
-Critical Reflective Practice and Research. (10 credits)
