Relief Sculpting - An Introduction - Course

  • Course description

Combining three-dimensional sculpture with two-dimensional pictorial, you will create your own relief sculpture.

Enjoy the unique art of sculpting.

The art of relief sculpting is steeped in history; it was used in ancient Egypt, Greece, Italy and many other cultures as a narrative and for artist expression.

This is an introduction to the creation of a relief sculpture from perhaps a favourite landscape, photograph or from your own contemporary design. There are in fact many platforms for this art form; you may even wish to create a complimentary design with reference to an historical event or era?

Your specialist tutor Julia Carter, who possesses many years of experience teaching sculpting will develop your knowledge, skills and the fundamental techniques of combining three-dimensional sculpture with two-dimensional pictorial, you will create your relief sculpture using air-drying clay.

Once the piece is finished you will be introduced to the basic method of mold making. Then taking a mold from your work and finally casting it to produce a durable wall-mountable panel, which you can then finish with various effects.

All of these procedures will be undertaken in our purpose built workshop at Arts University Bournemouth.
