Short Course - Introduction to Explosives III

  • Entry requirements National Security Statement
  • Course description This section discusses the theory of ignition and relates this theory to the different types of ignition mechanisms.  It goes on to look at how explosives and propellants are ignited and then relates this to how an explosive train works.  Finally it covers some of the safety systems designed into munitions to ensure that the different types of explosives in a munition perform correctly and in a timely manner!

By the end of this section you will be able to:

        * define terms associated with initiation
        * explain the theory of hotspots
        * describe the mechanisms used to stimulate an explosive composition to ignition
        * describe the components and function of an explosive train
        * describe the safety mechanisms employed in munitions

    Course length

Students who enrol on this section have 4 weeks in which to complete it (the actual time it takes to work through the section is about an hour if you have the necessary technical/chemical knowledge)

    Location

This is a fully distance learning course (you are not entitled to visit the Shrivenham campus)
