Ukrainian Language Courses

  • Course description Ukrainian is a language of the East Slavic subgroup of the Slavic languages. It is the official state language of the Ukraine and uses the Cyrillic alphabet. It shares some vocabulary with the languages of the neighboring Slavic nations, most notably with Belarussian, Ukrainian, Russian and Slovak.Despite twice being banned by Imperial Russia during the political persecutions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Ukrainian is still flourishing.

The Ukrainians make up one of the largest European ethnic groups with a population of more than 44 million people worldwide. Of these, around 37 million still live in the Ukraine and represent about three-quarters of the population there. The largest Ukrainian community outside of the Ukraine is in Russia with approximately 3 million Russian citizens considering themselves to be ethnic Ukrainians.

Poland, officially known as the Republic of Poland, is a country in Central Europe bordered by Germany to the west, the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south, Ukraine and Belarus to the east, and the Baltic Sea, Lithuania and the Russian enclave Kaliningrad Oblast to the north. It also shares a maritime border with Denmark and Sweden.

The Ukraine gained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and is today in the 'top thirty' of the world's largest economies. This rapidly growing economy is boosted by its main exports in metals, pipes, machinery, military equipment, petroleum products, textiles and agricultural products. The Ukrainian stock market grew by 10 times its size between 2000 and 2006, including the tremendous 341% growth in 2004, followed by 28% growth in 2005, and 24% growth in 2006. The country has a unique pivotal geo-strategic position between Europe and Asia and has a crucial role in the transportation of oil and gas from the east to the west.
