Urban Design, MA

  • Entry requirements The programme is also aimed at graduates from professional courses, such as urban design, architecture, landscape architecture and appropriate related subjects; and design professionals with five to ten years' experience who want a change in direction and/or to update their expertise.
  • Academic title Urban Design, MA
  • Course description There is a growing demand for qualified urban designers and, consequently, a growing number of urban design courses available in the UK. Uniquely the University of Greenwich programme deals primarily with design of built form and urban space, as opposed to the planning emphasis of many other degrees, so the programme will appeal to professionals interested in these design aspects.

Because of the interdisciplinary nature of urban design, teamwork is an important aspect of the programme, and this is often expanded through workshops with students and staff from other disciplines and European schools, and with local authority officers and community groups. Working with the community highlights an increasingly important aspect of urban design: public participation.

To encompass all of these elements, the programme deals in detail with the various professional stages of a project, backed up by theoretical studies. Theoretical teaching is based on a morphological approach, which relates urban and spatial configuration to social behaviour, giving a firm foundation for the design of socially sustainable urban places.
