Course descriptionThe MSc Western Medical Acupuncture has been developed in collaboration with the British Medical Acupuncture Society.
MSc Western Medical Acupuncture has been developed in recognition of the fact that expertise and research in this field are currently evolving and that practitioners require competence, skill and academic rigour to ensure the appropriate use of this complementary therapy, with the aim of improving patient care and outcomes.
The programme has been designed to meet the needs of busy healthcare professionals with an interest in acupuncture who wish to expand their knowledge and critical understanding of this therapy in contemporary healthcare. It enables suitably qualified health professionals to develop and consolidate their skills and expand their knowledge related to acupuncture and to make a contribution to the literature on the subject.
The programme will provide inter-professional education for a range of medical and non-medical practitioners from varied settings across primary and secondary care including doctors, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths and dentists.
Work placement
You will be in employment in an appropriate area of practice using acupuncture in your medical practice. Prior to commencing the course it is essential that you complete a BMAS foundation course or similar.

This programme will be taken as part of your CPD and will enhance your acupuncture practice within your clinical setting.
Teaching methods
Mostly delivered on-line with minimum attendance required. Modules are assessed by a combination of written coursework, clinical portfolios and presentations. To complete the masters degree you will write a substantial piece of written work (8,000 – 10,000 words) that will be an evaluative project related to acupuncture practice and be profession specific.
