  This unique programme addresses the perceived divide between theory and practice in archaeological fieldwork and cultural resource management.  We combine a critical and informed approach to interpretation with advanced training in research skills, methods and techniques. From surveying prehistoric landscapes to recording industrial buildings, excavation and analysis of material culture, you will gain experience in all areas of contemporary professional practice, including archival research, desk-based assessments and project management.
  
  Module details
  
  Research training is an important part of the MA programme. There is one compulsory component:
  
  -SAGE (Skills Awareness for Graduate Education): This course addresses broad research skills and trains students in areas such as formulating research questions, developing analytical strategies, and critical use of sources. Students also undertake a skills audit to identify specific training needs and relevant training courses.
  
  In addition, students take four compulsory modules:
  
  -Theory & Method
  -Fieldwork Practice
  -Project Planning and Management
  -Placement (two months)
  
  One of the strengths of this MA programme is that it combines the research expertise of the academic staff within the Subject Area, with the professional experience of the University of Manchester Archaeology Unit and Greater Manchester Archaeology Unit. Representatives from all three institutions will participate on the course, alongside external experts from the discipline. (Overall co-ordination for the programme will be managed throughout by the Course Director, according to their other commitments and periods of research leave).
