  • Objectives
    This course combines the study of English literature and language with a rigorous training in analytical philosophy. Students will develop important skills in clear thinking, argument, the use of language, and independent study. A wide range of modules is available in both subjects, covering key areas in English studies (including language, modern literature, drama, medieval studies, and literary theory) and in philosophy.

    Programme

    Year one

    You gain familiarity with the practices of working at degree level and you are introduced to language and modern literature in core English modules and may be able to choose a module introducing either medieval studies or drama. In Philosophy, you will be introduced to the subject through a series of core modules in central philosophical problems and you will also be able to choose optional modules.

    Year two

    Reflecting on and developing year one studies in English, you take a core module in literary theory and then, based on the options previously taken, can choose further modules in English language, modern literary culture, medieval studies and/or performance analysis. In Philosophy, there are further core modules in central areas and a wide variety of optional modules that allow you to develop and broaden your philosophical skills and knowledge.

    Year three

    You choose from a wide range of modules enabling you to specialise in key areas of English Studies. Joint honours students enjoy the same wide range of final year options in English Studies as single honours. In Philosophy, there will be free choice from a wide variety of more advanced modules, including the opportunity to write a dissertation on a topic of your own choosing.
