    Course description

This 4 year degree course offers an alternative approach to language studies at undergraduate level. The programme combines the central elements of a Modern Language honours programme with core course units in European politics within the context of international relations and global politics.

In addition, you have a free choice of course units in economics, history and take a free choice language course unit in the first two years. You develop your knowledge of Europe and, in particular, of your chosen language and culture. Core language courses are complemented by a wide range of other subjects, including culture, society, literature, linguistics, history, art, and cinema; world and European politics; economics, international relations, economic history, social history, and political history. In your first two years, you also study a subsidiary language, which can be taken from beginners' level.

This programme has been designed to equip students with strong analytic skills and an informed understanding of contemporary European developments, together with written and oral competence in a Modern language to graduate level within a global context. It includes a compulsory (third) year spent in Europe. The combination of subjects studied encourages you to develop a problem-solving approach to the real world, recognising that contemporary European problems and issues cannot be broken down into neat academic disciplines.

    Special features

You are taught across four specialist schools and therefore benefit from expertise in all areas of your course.  The language side of your degree is delivered by native speakers exposing you to accurate spoken and written language.

The European Studies element in the first and second years is made up of course-units in politics together with additional courses chosen from economics, international relations, and political history. The first year foundation courses in politics introduce you to the government and politics of the states of Western Europe and include a comparative political analysis of three major political systems.

The third year of your degree will be spent in a European country where your target language is spoken.
