    Programme

    Year one

You will be encouraged to engage in multi disciplinary activity, in addition to core studies in Hollywood and international film history, the analysis of film texts and key critical perspectives and the development of the television medium. You also begin a structured course in Spanish to take you from A level to degree level, and begin the study of Portuguese. You are introduced to aspects of modern Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American literature, culture and history.

    Year two

You deepen your understanding of key critical and theoretical approaches in the study of the production, circulation and cultural reception of film and television. Modules explore the way in which film and television converge in the contemporary media landscape, explore the phenomenon of transnational media flows, and consider the social significance of the culture industries and issues of representation. In this year, you develop your knowledge of Spanish (and Portuguese if you choose to continue) to prepare you for the year abroad and widen your knowledge of more specialist aspects of modern Spanish and Latin American literature, cultures and history.

    Year three

Spent in Spain or Spanish America or, if applicable, divided between Portugal or Brazil and Spain or Spanish America, either studying in a higher education institution, or working as an assistant in a school, or on a work placement.

    Year four

You specialise in specific aspects of film and television studies by choosing from a range of advanced modules. These offer the possibility of investigating new and emerging areas of film studies concerning the production of texts, film going and film audiences. You also write an independent research dissertation and build on your language acquisition to develop your language skills to degree level, and select specialist options from a range of research-based topics in the literature, culture and history of Spain and Latin America (and Portugal, Lusophone Africa and Brazil).
