  • Objectives
    At the interface of the human and the physical environments, geography is an integrative discipline, offering degrees in two separate faculties (Science and Social Science) as well as a number of joint degrees. Geographers take a broad perspective on the problems of today’s world, but doing a degree in geography means that you can specialise within the breadth on offer.
  • Entry requirements
    Entry Requirements * A/AS levels: Any three A levels usually acceptable. Geography is not normally required, but is preferred for Geography and Archaeology. For Physical Geography, some supplementary subjects require prior study to AS/A level. Two AS levels may be considered in place of one A level. General Studies accepted. * GCSE: Mathematics and English Language normally required at Grade C or above. * European Baccalaureate: Pass with 75% overall (for Physical Geography, the selection of some supplementary subjects requires prior study to pass level). * International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma with 32 points (for Physical Geography, the selection of some supplementary subjects requires prior study to diploma level). * Access: Pass with the requisite credits at level 3. * BTEC Nationals: Pass Diploma with DDM. GCSE Mathematics and English Language to Grade C or above, or equivalent. * Other Qualifications: Other national and international qualifications welcomed. Mature students welcomed: alternative qualifications considered. * Second Year Entry: Possible for those with advanced qualifications compatible with our degree structure.     Programme

    First Year

    The foundations of the joint degree are laid down in year one. You will acquire a broad grounding in the main areas of physical geography (including the principles of major global geographical processes) and gain skills in IT, critical analysis, reviewing literature, laboratory techniques, debate and communication. You will be introduced to the frameworks of archaeology, both BC and AD. You will gain essential practical skills. You will attend an archaeological field course (dig) in Leicester.

    Second Year

    The second year of this course delves a little deeper into aspects of geography and archaeology. Core modules include a module on environmental archaeology and an overseas geography field course to southern Spain You will also take a course in archaeological laboratory skills. You will be able to choose a number of optional courses ranging from early prehistory to early modern and industrial archaeology in archaeology and from biogeography and geomorphology in physical geography. To prepare you for your individual research project, that takes place at the end of the second year, you will be taught methods of Research Design and Planning.

    Third Year

    The third year of this course explores, now in fine detail, particular subject topics and outlines recent advances in knowledge that have occurred in both of these disciplines. You will be able to select from the following examples: Satellite Remote Sensing, GIS Applications, Geomorphology of Desert Environments, Neotropical Rainforests, Global Environmental Change, Ecological Futures, Biogeochemistry: Past and Present Environments, Atmosphere-Biosphere Interactions, Palaeoenvironments in Geography, and Food and Culture, Early Christian Europe, Archaeozoology, Iron Age Britain in its European Setting, Warfare and Violence in the Ancient World, in Archaeology. You will also complete your individual research project. Optional fieldcourses include Californian Drylands and the Amazon Rainforest.
