The study of history at the University of Reading offers unique insights into the richness and variety of human experience. When engaged in this exciting process of discovery, you will encounter a wide range of subjects and approaches to history while also having the opportunity to pursue your own enthusiasms. Leading scholars guide you through the latest developments in the discipline from the end of the ancient world to the new millennium. We offer single and combined courses covering Britain and Europe from the Middle Ages to the present, and Modern America; Masters courses in Medieval Studies and Modern History; and research degrees. All are available full or part time.

Reading is well-resourced for history with 21 full-time staff actively engaged in teaching. In addition, the University Library has some excellent holdings in books and journals for a variety of periods and subjects. The Department is also linked with the Museum of English Rural Life (MERL), and has access to the museums library, as well as their extensive collection of archives and artefacts.

Our extensive range of periods, topics and special subjects ensure both wide choice and that you are taught directly by specialists in friendly and supportive seminars. You have considerable freedom to tailor your course to fit your own interests, particularly through the dissertation, an original piece of research on a subject of your own choice, and the independent study which enables you to apply and develop your historical skills outside the University.
