Friday 8 February 2008 saw the official launch of Salford Law School with special guests Shami Chakrabati CBE, director of human rights group Liberty and Lady Brenda Hale, the UK's first and only female law lord, whom the new Salford Law School's purpose-built Lady Hale Building is named after.

Shami Chakrabti spoke on Current Human Rights Issues to a packed lecture theatre of current and prospective Salford Law School students and many other distinguished guests including the Lady Mayoress of Salford, barristers, solicitors and University staff.

The lecture was followed by drinks and canapes before moving on to the Compass Rooms at the Lowry Centre, Salford Quays for a celebration meal organised by Salford Law Society. After dinner Baroness Hale addressed the guests and expressed her delight and honour at having such a marvellous and modern building named after her.

It is remarkable that just twelve months after Baroness Hale unveiled the Foundation Stone for the new Law School Building, we welcomed our first cohort of LLB students through the doors. I think you will agree its external appearance is a striking addition to the central campus (particularly at night) and all of us working in it have found its interior a really user friendly space.

Housed in its own state-of-the-art building, featuring a Law Society approved library and latest computer facilities, the School offers an LLB programme that combines the best of traditional law studies with the modern practical skills required of a lawyer in the 21st Century and postgraduate programmes, each of which sets the rigour of legal scholarship in the context of contemporary professions. Salford Law School has exceeded its target for the fist intake of students this academic year - with almost 100 budding lawyers now studying within the new £10m purpose-built facility.
