  • Objectives
    At the end of the programme students should: * Appreciate the contribution to academic and intellectual culture made by the discipline of Linguistics, understand the main principles behind linguistic theorising and be able to evaluate specific claims put forward by linguists in terms of how those claims are developed and formulated, and how they relate to the discipline as a whole. * Understand the relevance of Linguistics to the practice and methodology of English language teaching. The programme will: * Consolidate the students’ grounding in grammar, phonetics and general linguistics. * Expose students to theories and methods in the disciplinary and professional areas of English Language Teaching methodology in a way which will enable them to appreciate work in these areas which is at the frontiers of the subject, and which will advance their professional standing. * Provide training in research methods and in the associated skills which will enable them to plan, execute and write up a personal research project in Linguistics and Phonetics. * Make available through the range of optional modules the opportunity to develop their experience of another area or areas of the subject.
  • Entry requirements
    Entry requirements English language requirements: * For all students whose 1st language is not English, or who did not do their undergraduate study in an English-speaking nation, proof of English Proficiency will be required. * IELTS: (Academic) score of 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component * or TOEFL (computer-based) score of 240 with no less than 4.5 on the essay rating, and no less than 19 in each individual section * or TOEFL (paper-based) score of 580 with no less than 4.5 in the Test of Written English, and no less than 53 in each individual skill * or TOEFL (internet-based) score of 94 with no less than 20 on listening, reading and speaking, and 22 on writing Academic entry requirements: * Normally a good upper second class honours degree, or equivalent, in English, languages or social sciences, with at least one year’s experience of teaching English full-time (2 years part-time) involving lesson-delivery and lesson-planning (not just employed as a teaching assistant).

    Department of Linguistics and Phonetics
    The Department has a long tradition of providing advanced instruction and research supervision at Diploma, MA, MPhil, and PhD levels, for both international and home students. There are postgraduate students from about a dozen countries in the Department. Staff have a wide range of research interests including instrumental phonetics, syntactic theory, pragmatics and corpus linguistics.

    The Department's resources include a phonetics laboratory and computing facilities, a tape library, video and sound recording facilities and a purpose-built sound studio. There is easy access to University resources such as machine-readable corpora of written and spoken English, and the Brotherton Library is one of the largest reseach libraries in the country.

    Students are required to study 45 credits from the following modules:

    Students must enrol for 180 credits and pass at least 150 credits with an overall average of 50 or above to be awarded the MA
