The taught element of the course is studied by both MA and Diploma students and consists of a set of core modules. • Course description
  The MA in Social Research and Sociology offers a unique course of instruction and research training in ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. All students take four specialist modules: ethnomethodological research, conversation analysis, membership categorization analysis and ethnomethodological studies of work. In addition, together with students on other postgraduate degrees offered by the School of Social Sciences, all students are provided with generic research training in methods of social science research. This generic social science research module provides a useful background to the specialist training with respect to points of continuity and contrast.

  Research dissertation
  
      * The dissertation is a piece of independent research where students are expected to apply their research skills to a specific topic in ethnomethodology or conversation analysis. This work is undertaken with academic guidance provided by a supervisor with appropriate expertise.
      * Applications are welcome from students with interests in any domain of empirical phenomena that lends itself to ethnomethodological and/or conversation analytic investigation.
  
  Staffing and Supervision
  
      * For 2008-09, the team responsible for teaching and supervision will consist of Professor Stephen Hester and Dr Roger Slack, together with part-time assistance from Dr Rod Watson and Professor Wes Sharrock.

  Recently completed projects include studies of:
  
      * Sequential and categorical organisation in descriptions of ‘deviance’ in referral talk
      * Searching for help and advice on a ‘Poisons Helpline’
      * Visual analysis in medical settings
  
  Teaching and assessment methods
  
  Teaching occurs via seminars, workshops and tutorials given by the staff mentioned above and occasional visiting speakers. Assessment methods include essays, assignments and a 15,000 word dissertation.
