  • Objectives
    This programme is designed to give postgraduate students an understanding of the role that mental phenomena and kinds play in the understanding and explanation of human behaviour in everyday and scientific contexts; to explore the study of mind from a multidisciplinary perspective.
  • Entry requirements
    Entrance Requirements Applicants for the MA are normally required to have a 2.1 degree or equivalent in Philosophy or a related subject from a recognised institution. For overseas students, a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.3 or higher (or equivalent) from an accredited institution is normally expected. Applicants with a high 2.2 (58%) will be considered for admission to Postgraduate Diploma. Additional Information for International Students Students for whom English is not their first language normally require an IELTS score of 6.5.

  • Course description
    Course Content

    Four taught modules, plus a dissertation of no more than 15,000 words. The dissertation should be on a theme that falls within the specialist area. The dissertation is double-weight.

    Students will take:
    -Approaches to Social Science Research
    -Evolution and Human Behaviour
    -Philosophy of Cognitive Science

    and one option from the following:
    -Social Cognition
    -Cognitive Science of Religion

    Essays; seminar presentations; dissertation.

    This degree qualifies for DEL funding.

    Special Features
    It is possible to study for a Postgraduate Diploma in each of the areas covered by our MA programmes. The Postgraduate Diploma is constructed around the coursework elements of the MA programmes. On successful completion of the coursework, it is possible to submit the dissertation for an award of MA.

    All of the MA programmes offered in the School provide an appropriate basis for those who wish to proceed to doctoral study. In addition, our graduates go on to a wide range of careers in both the public and private sectors.
