  • Objectives
    The MA in French Studies aims to give graduates in the field of French Studies the opportunity to acquire advanced knowledge and understanding of a wide range of topics in French literature and culture, to specialise in areas which particularly interest them, and to enhance professional skills relevant to a variety of careers. It also aims to develop a knowledge and understanding of the principles of scholarship and research methods, and of literary and critical theory as a foundation for doctoral research.

    Entrance Requirements Normally a 2.1 honours degree in French. Additional Information for International Students An IELTS score of 6.5 and TOEFL score of 575 on paper and 233 on computer.

    Course Content
    Four taught modules from the following:

    -From Realism to Naturalism
    -Gender and Genre
    -Independent Study
    -Narrative, Representation, Memory (compulsory)
    -Research Methods (compulsory)
    -Rewriting Memory: Autobiography and Autofiction
    -The European Renaissance
    -Theoretical Issues in French Stylistics

    Dissertation (compulsory double module)

    A module from another French MA pathway, or from a German, Irish, or Spanish MA pathway for which students meet the entrance requirements, may be substituted for an optional module in second semester.

    Assessment
    The taught modules will be assessed by written assignments; candidates who have reached a pass mark in the taught modules will submit a dissertation of 15,000 words.
