  • Objectives
    This programme enables students to deepen their knowledge of one or more specialist areas of study. It provides advanced training in research and writing skills for in-service teachers and other professionals as well as for those who wish to pursue the PhD.
  • Entry requirements
    Entrance Requirements Normally a good honours degree, at least half of which is in Hispanic Studies. Additional Information for International Students An IELTS score of 6.5 and TOEFL score of 575 on paper and 233 on computer.

    Course Content
    Research Methods (compulsory)
    Dissertation (compulsory double module)

    Four taught modules from the following:
    -Against the Grain: Dark Voices of the Spanish Golden Age Drama
    -Imitation and Influence in Literature
    -Mythologies of the Feminine
    -Revolution, History and Myth in Mexico
    -Medicine and Magic in Colonial Mexico
    -The Spanish Enlightenment
    -The Surrealist Movement in Spain
    -Themes and Forces in Hispanic Drama

    A comparable module from the MA programmes in French, German or Celtic Studies may be substituted in the second semester for one of the non-compulsory modules by students who have a sound linguistic knowledge in the area concerned.

    Alternatively, a module from the MA in Spanish: Image and Text may be substituted for one of the non-compulsory modules.

    Please note that not all these modules will be available in any one year.

    Assessment
    The taught modules will be assessed by written assignments; candidates who have reached a 50 per cent pass mark in the taught modules will submit a dissertation, not exceeding 15,000 words.
