  • Course description
MA Research in Art and Design supports students in their own individual research project to a masters qualification over one calendar year. Students can work in subjects across the fine art, design, and film making disciplines offered at Sheffield Hallam.

The course builds on the high quality art and design research profile at SHU. It aims to help newly graduated or more experienced practitioners to identify their individual research orientation and to complete a programme of research that proves their abilities. The course is split into three levels, corresponding to the intermediate qualifications of postgraduate certificate, diploma and MA. The first two semesters involve academic study and other activities in common with the wider body of postgraduate students in art and design.

Our Art and Design department has been rated five, the highest level available, in the recent national Research Assessment Exercise. This means our research is rated as being of international standing, and we are one of only 10 universities in the country to achieve this rating.

Students may also register for MPhil/PhD after two semesters of the course.

    Associated careers

There is scope to use this qualification to further a range of career plans. These might be centred on self-employment in art or design practice, employment in design research or progression to PhD study leading to an academic career.

The course is designed as a preparation for PhD study in Art and Design and students may in exceptional circumstances register for MPhil/PhD after two semesters of the course.

    Course content

During semesters one and two, students on the MA Research in Art and Design take lectures that are in common with the other postgraduates. These cover • philosophy of research and an overview of research traditions and cultures • techniques of information gathering • methods of data collection and analysis and the presentation of research results

Other activities are project-based and delivered by seminars and tutorials with your nominated personal tutors.
