    This programme combines the complementary research and teaching expertise of Manchester, Keele and Salford universities to give a sound insight into the immunology and molecular biology of parasitic diseases and their transmission by vectors. Students are trained in the modern experimental research techniques used in parasite-vector relationship study. This programme is ideal for students wishing to gain additional training prior to embarking on a research career in parasitology, entomology, immunology or molecular biology. Overseas students can obtain specialist training prior to undertaking or managing parasitological or vector related research and control appropriate to their own country.

    Module details
    Typical compulsory course-units include: Core Parasitology and Vector Biology; Immunology of Parasitic Infections; Molecular Biology of Parasites; Vector Biology and Control; Analytical Parasitology and a Research Skills module. Students also undertake a research project in one of the three institutions on a topical aspect of parasitology.

    Career opportunities
    Graduates are prepared to embark on further PhD study in areas such as haematology, molecular biology and immunology of infectious diseases. Graduates typically enter professional careers in teaching, the pharmaceutical industry, the water and river authorities, public health, publishing or scientific laboratory management. Careers in pollution control, pesticide research, drug design and epidemiology are also popular.

    Assessment is through written examination, student presentations, written assignments, practical classes and a research project dissertation.
