• Objectives
  his programme aims to develop the skills and confidence of students who wish to pursue a successful career in virological sciences. Many of the skills developed will be generic and thus transferable to a wide range of scientific disciplines. A particular strength of the programme is that you will be working on research projects in laboratories with international/national reputations in a range of areas from both human and veterinary virology. The programme is suitable for both home and international graduates, and would serve as a good training for prospective PhD candidates. On this programme you will: * learn a wide range of practical skills by working on research projects in laboratories with international and national reputations in virology. * develop an understanding of the main areas of current research in human and veterinary virology. * learn how to critically assess your own and published research. * develop presentation and IT skills necessary for a career in virological science.

  Entry requirements A minimum of a second class Honours degree or equivalent (eg GPA of 3.0 or above), in a relevant subject. Professional experience may be taken into account.

  Content
  
  The programme consists of:
  
      * core taught courses including Molecular virology and Viruses and disease
      * two laboratory based research projects each lasting 20 weeks
      * taught courses developing presentation skills and IT skills.
  
  Additional optional taught courses are available:
  
      * Molecular immunology
      * Cancer – molecular and cell biology
      * Eukaryotic genes
      * Vaccine development strategies
      * Cell signalling and disease
      * Transcription in developing systems.
  
  The programme aims to immerse you in the research environment of the University during your project placement. As such there will be many opportunities for you to gain relevant experience, for example:
  
      * Research seminars by leading researchers on virological topics at the cutting edge of virology
      * Laboratory meetings
      * Research in progress meetings
      * Hands-on training using relevant research equipment.
