    Programme

    The MSc by Research in Scottish History provides students with structured research training while at the same time enabling them to pursue a research project which they design themselves, in consultation with supervisors. It serves as both a self-contained research degree and a preparation for further study for the PhD degree.

    Learning Outcomes

    Following successful completion of the programme, students will develop:

        * an advanced knowledge of and competency in a specific field of history;
        * an ability to work in a manner which is theoretically and methodologically engaged;
        * a familiarity with historiography and modes of historical explanation;
        * skills in research design and strategy that are required to achieve the focus, precision and time management that modern research conditions demand;
        * skills of archival and other relevant forms of research together with the ability to exploit such sources in a critical manner;
        * the ability to formulate and sustain a substantive piece of research in history.

    How You Will Be Taught

    Research supervision in most areas of Scottish History is available within the School. Students take two training courses common to all History MSc degrees and further research training on particular topics such as palaeography or computing is available. As this is a research degree, students spend most of their time conducting original research on their chosen topic. They normally write three research essays and a dissertation.
